Watching Cleo feed herself yogurt this morning, we couldn’t help but notice the similarity to a certain jolly elf!

After years of Mississippi living, during which we encountered perhaps two days of snowfall, we are slowly growing accustomed again to life with precipitation of the frozen variety. Here, we take in a winter stroll through the hills near our house.
While Tiffany was out of town recently, Millie spied a bottle of bubbles on the top shelf of the closet. "I really have to show Cleo how the bubbles work, Daddy!" she implored. Since it was freezing outside, Mark led Millie and Cleo to the "bubble room" (i.e., the guest shower) to get to work. Ever the mentor to her little sister, Millie proceeded to give Cleo a complete demonstration of the magic of bubbles. And, best of all for an already overstretched Daddy, no mess!
As the weather turns cold here in Utah, we certainly miss the 75-degree Novembers back in Mississippi. We’ve tried to get outside as much as possible, though, and enjoy some of the great trails in the area. Here, a tuckered Millie rides on Daddy’s shoulders as they stroll through the foothills near our house.
I think we can safely assume we have no readers left, since we’ve gone a full two months without an update.
Still, we’ll put a few posts out into the ether so the Google bots and careless surfers can enjoy them.
It’s been a busy couple of months for the Pett family, jam packed with travel and school and jobs. One highlight is that Mark spent two weeks traversing the nation on his first book tour. He was promoting his picture book, "The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes," which he wrote with his friend Gary and illustrated. His hand is still cramped, after signing oodles of books and drawing a lifetime’s worth of hamsters.
Mark loved meeting kids from across the country and getting a firsthand look at some of our nation’s amazing independent bookstores.
"The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes" is available at bookstores nationwide and on the big online sites, including Amazon.
One wonderful aspect to our move to Utah has been that Millie and Cleo
will grow up with their cousin Luca! Here, Luca decides what to make
of Cleo…
We think she waited until we lived in a house with some carpet in it, but our little Cleo has taken her first steps! Enjoy this short video of Cleo in action…
This entire move would not have been possible without the grace and toil of Tiffany’s parents, Grammy and Papa Tidwell. On the front end, they flew to Mississippi to help us pack boxes for a week. Then they drove our minivan across the country and helped us unpack on the back end! We don’t have the words to express our gratitude for this act of monumental generosity.
Here, Grammy and Cleo take a rare breather by a mountain stream.
Shortly after we arrived in Salt Lake, Millie began pre-school. She jumped right in on day one with enthusiasm and verve and the instructors could hardly believe she’d never been in a day-care environment. "She’s so polite!" they gushed (that’s our Southern girl!). The ensuing days, however, found Millie a bit reluctant in the mornings and missing her old house. Now, two weeks in, she is running to school and making friends with ease. We still talk about how much we miss our friends and our old home in Mississippi, but we think she’ll be all right.

Tiffany and the girls flew while Mark did the modern version of a wagon train across the plains, through the Rockies, and into Salt Lake City, just as his ancestors did (although without the handcarts).
